Molly MacDonald knows firsthand what it means to face cancer and financial instability at the same time. In April 2005, she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. While her prognosis was encouraging, the financial consequences were immediate and severe. She was in the middle of a job transition and could not begin her new role as planned. At the same time, her family had to absorb the cost of monthly COBRA health insurance premiums right as her income stopped. A difficult situation quickly became a crisis, and within months her family was facing the possibility of catastrophic financial loss. When Molly searched for support, she often encountered confusion and limited options. She found that many systems addressed medical treatment but failed to address everyday financial realities: housing payments, utilities, transportation, and insurance costs that continue even when a person is too sick to work. That gap changed the direction of her life. What began as a personal effort to get help became a mission to give help to others navigating treatment while trying to keep their households stable. In 2006, Molly and her husband co-founded Pink Fund. The organization's mission is to improve the lives of people in active breast cancer treatment by helping pay essential household bills, engaging communities, and increasing public understanding of financial hardship during illness. Pink Fund provides 90 days of non-medical financial aid, covering basic living expenses such as housing, transportation, utilities, and health insurance. This support is designed to create breathing room at a time when patients are physically, emotionally, and financially stretched. Pink Fund's model is practical and focused: when essential bills are covered, patients can direct more energy toward treatment and recovery. Reducing daily financial pressure can lower stress, support treatment adherence, and improve quality of life during one of the most vulnerable periods in a person's life. Since its founding through April 2026, Pink Fund has delivered $10.5 million in direct bill payments to patients' creditors, representing measurable relief for families in crisis and a sustained commitment to financial dignity in cancer care. Molly holds a degree in journalism from the University of Michigan. She also describes herself, with distinction, as a Lived Experience Expert. That combination of professional communication skills and lived insight defines her leadership style. She speaks with clarity, urgency, and compassion about what patients actually need when life is disrupted by diagnosis. Her work continues to center the realities too often left out of care conversations: income loss, household risk, and the everyday decisions families make to survive treatment. Through advocacy, education, and direct support, Molly MacDonald has helped build a national model for addressing financial toxicity in breast cancer care and has become a trusted voice for patients and families across the country.
